Open Handed Grooves

Here are a few patterns that can be played open-handed (ie with the left hand on the hi-hat and the right hand on the snare drum).

The first pattern is my recollection of the part that Simon Phillips played towards the end of the Pete Townshend song "Gonna Get Ya" on the Empty Glass recording. It's been a long time since I have heard the tune. When I first heard the song my (then) 13 year old ears thought he played the part that I wrote below. This pattern has remained in my drumming vocabulary as such. I wouldn't be surprised to listen to the track today and find out that I was way off. Anyway, it's a cool beat that is easy and fun to play.

The last pattern on the page is stolen from "Future Sounds" by David Garibaldi. I came across this pattern a few weeks ago. It is easier to play than it appears on paper.
